Join me for the first 'Design Like' in a while, as we look to a whole new medium for design inspiration: Photography. Learn what rug composition and photography have in common as we study the work of 20th century photographers like Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Julia Margaret Cameron, Irving Penn, and more. Design exercises will move the class from the work of one iconic photographer to the next, seizing on his or her main motifs and themes to draft sketches and evolve storytelling that bridges these two visual art forms.

The class is recorded for those who can't attend live. All you really need is a sketchbook and pencil, although tracing paper can be very helpful. No fancy supplies and you will not be put on the spot or called upon to share your work. You are welcome to work in class time or listen and work later alongside the recorded class. The same materials are provided whether you attend live or later.

This class is meant as an introduction to design in 20th-century photography, to discuss what works and what doesn't in terms of translating design ideas from photography form to a rug hooking pattern, and to challenge you with specific exercises that are themed to evoke the work of the photographers we are highlighting.
